Peter Bayer
PrincipalPrincipal Bayer has been with the Pembroke Pines Charter Schools since the inception of Pembroke Pines Charter High School at the Academic Village Campus in July of 2000. Mr. Bayer was the school’s assistant principal for first three years and is now in his fourteenth year as principal. As principal, Mr. Bayer also acts as the City liaison for the Academic Village Campus which includes partnerships with Broward Community College, Broward County’s Southwest Regional Library and the Aquatics Center for the City’s Parks and Recreation Department. In 2014 he oversaw the Academic Village expansion to include AVM, which he is also the principal over.
Born and raised in Westchester County, NY, Bayer received his undergraduate degree from Ithaca College in Ithaca New York. He moved to South Florida in 1990 and in 1993 he received a Masters in English/Education from Florida International University. While teaching in Broward County Schools, he later earned his Educational Specialist Degree in Educational Leadership from Nova Southeastern University. In addition, he also received his Ducktorate Degree in 1986 from Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom College Program!

Helen Yanez
Assistant PrincipalHelen Yanez has over 26 years of experience in education and has been working with the City of Pembroke Pines Charter Schools since 2005. Mrs. Yanez began her journey at charter teaching high school English. In 2011, Mrs. Yanez was given the role as Curriculum Specialist where she worked in that position until Fall of 2015. In the 2015-2016 school year, Mrs. Yanez became Assistant Principal in the high school. She now serves as the Assistant Principal for the Academic Village Middle. Mrs. Yanez has a Bachelor's and Master's Degree in English Education and Specialist's Degree in Educational Leadership from Florida International University.

Jennilee Abolafia
Guidance CounselorJennilee Abolafia has been working with the City of Pembroke Pines Charter Schools since 2012. Mrs. Abolafia began her journey at charter as the RtI Coordinator for all our city charter schools. Before charter, Mrs. Abolafia was a school psychologist and classroom teacher for Broward County Schools. In 2014, Mrs. Abolafia was given the role as Guidance Counselor and serves as the RtI liaison for our Academic Village Middle and High School. Mrs. Abolafia has a Bachelor's Degree in Exceptional Student Education and Elementary Education from Florida Atlantic University. In addition, Mrs. Abolafia holds a Master's Degree in Science and Specialist Degree in School Psychology from Nova Southeastern University.

Steve Bruns
High School Athletic DirectorSteve Bruns has been working with the City of Pembroke Pines Charter Schools since Fall 2001. He taught high school mathematics and was promoted to Behavior Specialist in 2007. In 2011, Mr. Bruns was assigned the role as the High School Athletic Director. Before teaching, Mr. Bruns worked as an accountant in Chicago. Mr. Bruns has a passion for football and served as the high school's head coach until Fall 2016. He holds a double Bachelor's Degree in Accounting and Finance and Master's Degree in Business Administration from Creighton University.

Anthony Kelly
Middle School Athletics DirectorAnthony Kelly has been working with the City of Pembroke Pines Charter Schools since Fall 2001. Anthony first served as Assistant Athletic Director of the high school. When the Academic Village Middle School opened in 2014, he was given the role as the Athletic Director. Before teaching, Mr. Kelly worked in the marketing field. He holds a Bachelor's Degree in Health and Physical Education from Northeastern State University.

Dana Ostendorf
ESE SpecialistDana Ostendorf has been working with the City of Pembroke Pines Charter Schools since Fall 2006. She started her journey at our FSU Charter Elementary School working with the Gifted population. In 2010, Ms. Ostendorf was assigned the role as ESE Specialist. Before charter, Ms. Ostendorf worked as an elementary teacher in Broward County Public Schools. Ms. Ostendorf holds a Bachelor's Degree in Sociology from the University of Florida and Master's Degree in Education from Nova Southeastern University.

Marisa Hazelton
ESE FacilitatorMarisa Hazelton has been in education since 2004 and is one of the founding faculty members of the Academic Village Middle School. Mrs. Hazelton began her teaching career in Miami-Dade County as an ESE teacher for Biology. She has also worked with elementary school children in individualized clusters. Currently, Mrs. Hazelton is the ESE Support Facilitator and was named "Teacher of the Year" for the 2015-2016 school year. Mrs. Hazleton holds a Bachelor's Degree in Specific Learning Disabilities and Master's Degree in TESOL (Teaching English as a Secondary Language) from Florida International University.

Jennifer Wilson
ESE Support FacilitatorMrs. Wilson has been working in education since 2016 with Broward County Public Schools. She joined Academic Village Middle School in 2019 as a student aide and was then given the position as ESE Support Facilitator once her certification was complete. We are proud to say she is our 2022 Teacher of the Year! Mrs. Wilson has a passion for beach volleyball and spends most of her time on the baseball field with her three boys.
