For over 4 years charter has continued its tradition of Poet Tees. The tradition remains and so does the spirit. During National Poetry Month, sophomores spend a week creating poems, picking themes, and decorating shirts. The sophomore made their poems then using an array of colors, they decorated their shirts to their liking and wore them on Friday April 28th. Shirts of all themes could be seen on Friday.Sophia Francisco commented, “It was fun wearing the shirts and having people see what you can do!” Sophia, whose theme was nature, made her shirt similar to the night sky and its stars.
Each English teacher had their own set of rules. For example, Mrs. Lutchi had her students write a sonnet or villanelle and had them memorize it and read it to the class whereas teachers like Mrs. Portuondo gave her students a choice of a reading a poem or singing a parody. Students were conducted to write 3 original poems then choose an already published one and express themselves through their shirts. They were graded based on their creativity and emphasis through reading some of their poems in front of their classmates. Although taken as a test grade, students did enjoy themselves and it's a creative tradition that PPCHS is sure to continue in the future.
